Personality:
There's a reason why the man whose name is right on the door of the Narumi Detective Agency finds himself throwing the occasional fit about not getting the credit he deserves.

Because he doesn't...really deserve it that much.

It's quite possible that Narumi is a perfectly competent detective. He was in the army at some point, possibly in an intelligence capacity, though he's since put that life behind him. (Narumi is an assumed name. Shouhei, the first name he's given in the English language release of the game is even more assumed, considering he doesn't have it in the Japanese version at all.) When he has a case to work on, he's logical, methodical and thorough as he works through it. The only problem is that “work” doesn't seem to be something he does outside of special occasions. Most things that come into the agency get delegated to Raidou while Narumi sits back in his fancy chair and relaxes. Admittedly, most of the cases that come in require Raidou's unique skill set as a devil summoner, but there are definitely things the boss should be taking on himself. Narumi can be ridiculous about this to the point of sighing about it being a shame that Raidou actually has to go to school sometimes, because he was sort of hoping he could do his laundry for him. It's embarrassing, especially considering he's nearly twice Raidou's age and surely capable of taking care of himself like an adult.

Narumi is a gentleman of the modern era. If he's not wearing the most stylish new cut of suit (which obviously has to be imported from Europe) and eating the most popular new dish (in excess, if he can wrangle it), then he's not living his life properly. It's clear that the majority of his funds go straight into keeping himself clothed in the trendiest of fashions and supplied with enough coffee and cigarettes to last most other people a lifetime. The fact that he has other expenses is where he runs into trouble. It's one thing to wear snazzy clothes, but it doesn't do you a whole lot of good if you can't go out and show them off while eating at the fanciest restaurants the Capital has to offer. Which is why he has a ludicrously large tab at most restaurants in the Capital and bill collectors calling him on a distressingly frequent basis. He is, shall we say, not the most fiscally responsible person. For all that he has the rest of his life in order, it's like he's completely incapable of making responsible adult decisions when it comes to his wallet. He's aware of it, too, and it's implied that it's part of the reason why he does the work he does for the Yatagarasu. He'd like to be a garden variety detective and help out kids who've lost their cat and star-crossed lovers and the like, but there's just no money in it. It makes him sad, but at the same time it doesn't curb his spending any.

Narumi isn't a total vain, lazy mess of a human being, though. While it's not at all accurate to say his usual nonsense is an act (because it's really not), it does provide a distraction from the fact that there really is a competent person underneath it all. Narumi takes his work seriously, especially if it's something he takes personally. Faced with a task that matters to him and that's within his capabilities to take care of, he becomes downright respectable. He's resourceful (he even keeps a lockpick in his hair just in case), methodical and forward-thinking in his methods. He's also not afraid to put himself at risk to get a job done, especially if he sees it as a way to protect the country or the people he cares about. This can extend to the point of recklessness at times, though Narumi certainly doesn't see it that way. He'll go off on his own if he feels it's up to him to fight his own battles, regardless of whether he's going to to be outnumbered and outgunned. It's implied that he can hold his own to a certain extent, but he's still a normal guy in a paranormal world and mundane skills can't get him very far. Still, he's very mindful of his standing as an adult and he feels that taking on things like that is part of it. At one point, he tells Raidou “Answering for the past is an adults-only job. It's you kids who have to worry about the future.” and this is a philosophy he seems to hold himself to. He's shown to take things on himself so they don't become a burden to Raidou and to worry that, even with that, Raidou has too much on his plate. He's actually not as bad at the whole “caring mentor” thing as it seems.

Narumi keeps that respectable side of his under wraps a bit. He can sober up for detective business, but his usual demeanor is pretty easygoing. At worst, it can border on obnoxious, especially if he's buttering up a client or acting like a petty five year old around police detectives. He keeps the serious stuff hidden away, for the most part. He doesn't grieve in the open and it's like pulling teeth to get him to talk about his past. Those are pretty private things to him that really don't fit the new image he's built around himself since starting the whole detective thing, so he tries to keep them out of sight as much as possible. Still, he's a stand-up guy if you get to know him.

Just don't trust him to pay for dinner.
